2007 Creativity Grant Winners

Grant WinnersThe District 50 Education Foundation is pleased to announced the 2007 Creativity Grant winners. Over $48,500 in grant requests were received and $16,700 were awarded to teachers and staff to increase academic achievement, encourage literacy, support English Language Learners and create after school programs to support education. The following staff won grants from the foundation.

 

JoAnn Weaver, Cheryl Stapp, Renea Sutton, Cyndie Talarico $500
Westminster Elementary After School Programs
Classes will be taught by teachers, staff and community members who will volunteer the time and talents. Programs will include After School Science and Math, Literacy through Art, Garden Club, and After School Crafts, all focusing on supporting school district standards and goals. Grant will provide supplies and materials for 80 students.

Ranum High School Increasing Reading Fluency

The purpose of this project is to improve reading fluency and comprehension and improve writing and vocabulary. The books requested for the program are great for all levels of readers. 400 Students will be impacted.

Westminster Elementary Boys Comic Book Lunch Club
Two staff members will volunteer their lunchtime to work with 20 boys in grades 4 and 5 to encourage additional reading. District standards will be used to implement program.

Sherrelwood Elementary Speech Language Resource Library
The Speech Therapy Department needs games, flash cards and books to incorporate articulation and language concepts for English and Spanish students. 23 students will be impacted this year, but these items will be useful for many years to come.

Ranum High School Descriptive Writing Reference Books

Create a small library of reference books for descriptive writing and poetry for 400 students in Language Arts classes at Ranum.

Sunset Ridge Elementary Denver Museum of Nature and Science Sleep-Over
Forty Six 5 th graders will spend the night at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science participating in interactive workshops expanding their knowledge about the earth, rocks and minerals.

Westminster Elementary Welcome to Westy Totes

Totes will be given out to all parents new to the school and/or district providing information about the school and district and include a book to read to the student, a parenting book, “Reading Strategies for You and Your Child”, information on the Irving Street Library, the school district VOICES program and a copy of the current school newsletter.

Ranum High School Shakespeare Alive

This project will support literacy and language development for English Language Learners at Ranum. This program will encourage higher level thinking with and expose students to cultural opportunities. The Colorado Shakespeare Festival will work with students creating a “hands-on” workshop to support their learning. 44 students will be supported with this grant.

Early Childhood Center Multicultural Books

This collection of books will enhance the classroom library and provide quality literature to young students. Children will be exposed to books about other cultures at a young age to develop an appreciation and understanding about other cultures. The books will be shared for many years but impact 32 students this school year.

Early Childhood Center Literacy Around the World

The grant would support books, puzzles and puppets to teach 32 students about different cultures. Grant items will continue to be used in the classroom in the future.

Early Childhood Center Ocean Discovery

A preschool classroom will be set up like an ocean environment to teach students about science, literacy, math and art. Students will discover seashells, ocean specimens and ocean animals with a microscope. We will use sea life counters and puzzles during math time, and read books rich in photography of actual ocean scenes. Grant impacts 32 students.

Westminster High School Choral Music Workshop

This grant would sponsor a world renowned choral clinician, Charlotte Adams, to work with four different classes (80 students) on vocal technique, expression of music and text and analogies to help with vocal productions. Grant will also purchase new choral music for students. This will also work together with the Celebration of Love concert at WHS combining music and poetry.

Sherrelwood Elementary Reading Counts for Every Student

Sherrelwood has been using the Reading Counts program for 5 years to support literacy and comprehension. The program tests students’ knowledge about books they have read. The testing motivates students to read carefully and often. This grant will purchase new quizzes to continue to challenge readers. It will be used by all students in grades 1 through 5 engaging 257 students.

Flynn Elementary School wide Enrichment Program

The School wide Enrichment Program is designed to encourage creative productivity in children by exposing them to a wide variety of discipline, topics, occupations, hobbies and events not covered in the regular curriculum. Teachers, parents, community volunteers, and students plan these experiences for sessions including web design, scrap booking, gardening, robotics, cooking, origami, and other programs impacting 350 students throughout the year.

Ranum High School Digital Print Making
This will provide for one additional computer and printer to be used in the digital photo studio. Currently 3 computers are used by 33 students at a time, 200 students per year take digital photography classes at Ranum.

Shaw Heights Middle School Spanish Book Library

Spanish books will be used weekly in classroom to encourage reading, writing and support the district Language Arts standards.

Metz Elementary Young Ameritowne
This grant will provide hands on lessons in free enterprise providing 70 students the opportunity to run their own life-like town. Students apply for jobs, elect a mayor, create laws, and manage bank accounts, experiencing free enterprise first hand. Curriculum supports district standards for math, science and literacy.

Shaw Heights Middle School Spring Musical
This grant will pay for the scripts, costumes and props for the bi-annual paly at Shaw Heights. 50 students will be participating in the event.

Scott Carpenter Middle School Spring Musical

Scott Carpenter is doing a spring musical to increase student knowledge and interest in the fine arts, support literacy goals and require higher level thinking for students. This project appeals to many students providing a creative outlet in the school and gets kids involved in a positive performing environment. Approximately 50 – 75 students will participate.

Mesa Elementary Ambassador Program

The program ensures that all new students learn the classroom and school expectations. As a first year Positive Behavior Support school, we want to include all students in teaching and modeling good behaviors. Grant will assist 80 students.

Tennyson Knolls Smart Boards

A smart Board is an easy to use technology provides kinesthetic learning for English Language Learners. The Smart Board is connected with the internet to support learning by seeing images and hearing the words for the images. This will be used by 187 students.

Mesa Family Reading and Empowerment Nights

Family Reading Night will support connections between the school and our families. Mesa will host 2 evening events for 500 families to encourage family involvement in school in order to improve academic achievement.

Tennyson Knolls Listening Center

This grant will allow our students to listen to books on CD’s or tape to increase their reading skills. This is especially effective for new readers and English Language Learners. 55 students will benefit from the Listening Center in 2007.

Mesa Elementary Creating Fluent readers with Listening Centers

Students will be able to expand their vocabulary, increase their reading and listening skills. The Listening Centers will provide meaningful, engaging literacy activities for 65 students, exposing them to fluent reading in a variety of genres.

Sunset Ridge Acoustic Guitar Club

Staff will support a weekly after school guitar club for students teaching basic chords, how to read music, learning to lay simple songs and culminating in a performance in front of an audience. 10 to 15 students will participate. Matching funds provided by Sunset Ridge PTA.

Baker Elementary Kindergarteners As Authors E Book Project

This project will enable students to author their own books, teaching sound recognition, and working on shared writing activities. Students will use books to practice at home reading. Books can be created in English and Spanish to support all readers. 50 students will be immediately impacted by grant will be useful for many years.

Westminster Elementary Guitars for Mariachi Band

This project adds additional guitars for the Mariachi Club at Westy. In 2006 -2007, the school received 10 guitars to start this club. The club has become so popular, more guitars are needed. This will effect 30 students.

Clear Lake MS International Night

International Night is designed to promote cultural diversity and allow students the opportunity to explore other cultures through music, the arts, live cultural performances and food tastings. 700 students participate in this event.
